When I'm instructing I've always been recommending this if a novice is driving too hard or too fast to turn on the A/C. On most 4 cylinder cars it makes a big different in times and calming that gas pedal foot.
Hey what ever works for you.

Thanks for the props man but I'm not a naturally skilled driver. I've just got a fair amount of experience with autocrossing, and I know what you're supposed to do (even if I can't do it myself).
I think that very, very few of us are gifted enough to be fast all on our own.
Even if you are Juan Montoya's spiritual twin, you will still be faster if you observe what the other fast guys do and try their advice/techniques on for size . . .

Not to bring the subject back from the dead, but my falkens make a bit of noise a little before the limit of adhesion, and my all-season craptacular tires made tons of noise way before limit of adhesion. Too many variables to say when/why tires make noise. I'm pretty surprised though that your Subie drivers on street itres don't make a ton of noise. They usually make a lot - and a distinctive - noise.
As for the A/C, it does suck power. Parasitic drag can help those who think since they're racing, they need to be fast all the time.
germ makes a good point, but maybe not something to worry about for a first-time. Took me a while to realize just how much brake I really had.
