Taknig place IN the Holocaust: that Roberto Benigni film, Life is Beautiful.
Related, but not actually in the ghettos: an old comedy by Ernst Lubitsch: To Be or Not to Be. Hilarious movie! About a bunch of Polish actors who work against the Nazis.
I think they made a movie of The Diary of Anne Frank.
And, of course, there is Sophie's Choice with Meryl Streep, about a Southern writer who meets a woman and her boyfriend in NYC, befriends them, and then begins to learn some terrible things while at the same time falling in love....
A comedy/drama about a German girl trying to uncover the truth about her small town's involvement in the Third Reich: The Nasty Girl. Hard to find, though, it's in German from 1990 - I know it's on laserdisc, but who has a player anymore?
There are tons more... I'll post more if requested, but those are some good starters.
