Well I just pulled some out tonight just to be curious. Clear as when I put it in the car and the level hasn't changed after 2 weeks.

When you take of the filter is there a valve that prevents oil from draining out of the block?

If you let the car sit overnight all the oil drains back into the oil pan. Some oil filters (OEM and if I remember right Mobil 1) have an anti-drain back valve to keep some oil in the filter so on start up you have oil going into the engine right away.

after 3000 miles my oil looks worked! black and nasty! no way im keeping that shit in for 5k...
clean oil and a new filter gives me piece of mind and while im sure the lubricating can last 5k or more, there are additives that help engines that don't last that long.
and draining oil, replacing filter, and putting old oil back in takes as much time as putting in new oil...

not convinced its.. valvoline max life ever 3k for me! it hasn't failed me yet so why change something that works.

On civics and integras the filter's above the oil level. If you take the filter off you'll loose whatever oil is in the filter and some, but most stays in the engine.
