Due to the DVD rom's positioning within the 360 case, the GPU heat sink is about 1/4th the height of the CPU's.
The fan shroud was molded to the GPU / CPU size. You can see that less air is pulled from the undersized heat sink.
The GPU overheats and separates from the excessive heat due to lack of proper cooling.
With extended game play, the solder balls that hold the GPU to the motherboard become fluid again. Add a vertical mount, warping motherboard, and jittery / shaky DVD rom to the equation, yeah ... RRoD hell. There's no escaping this with any model except for the Jasper.
Eliminate the initial heat, then nothing happens.
The RRoD can temporarily fix itself. The fluid solder cools, the GPU reconnects. That's why you get the RRoD, turn it back on, and it works ... for a limited time.
