On this date in 1980 John Lennon was shot and killed as he was walking into his apartment building in New York City. Shortly before his death, Lennon said this in an interview:
"When I left England, I still couldn't go out on the street. It took me years to unwind -- I would be walking around tense, waiting for somebody to say something or jump me. Here in New York, I can go right out of this door now and go into a restaurant. You know how great that is?"
Freaky.
