Selling your current car & spending more money on a new car just to save a few bucks

So I should sell my 1989 325i and get a newer one for improved gas mileage...I get nearly 28 now in all around driving, I don't owe anything on it, and maintenance is cheap. The best part is that my 2 car discount for insurance is more than what I pay on it to insure it. I think I'll just run it into the ground if I don't fix it up.

I think it's just times like these with insane gas prices that make people realize how good they had it. Now you see families traveling less on the weekend, carpooling, riding bikes, etc.
Even if and when gas prices go back down, you'll probably see less people in gas guzzling automobiles.

Does anyone know what the new 06 civic si gets gas mileage? Cause I was thinking of changing from my 00 prelude SH to the si since its the same HP rating, but the si I think is lighter, has 6 gears, and is just as bad ass looking as the 5th gen.

I bought my Golf TDI for $19,300 out the door + TTT...not more than a 1.8T, and a lot less than the hybrids are going for. I could have taken deleivery immediately if I hadn't wanted a specific int/ext color combo. I average 40-43mpg not trying city/hwy mix...I have averaged up to 48.5mpg on a tank before. I also have my TDI chipped and it's putting out 152WHP/274WTQ, cost me $315 at waterfest this year for the reprogram. On my move from NJ-FL with a packed car probably weighing in around 3800lbs w/ me in it I averaged 47mpg h:
TDI ownz, 99-03 TDI ownz more for MPG, 04+ for power

When it comes down to it, it really depends on how much these people drive and how much the cost of gas is going to increase over the course of ownership. We'll be looking back at $3 soon and thinking, "man, gas sure was cheap". Wait until it gets to $5 or $10/gallon. Suddenly, that extra 10mpg will start to seem closer to worth it.

I am cleaning out my stable and looking into a used motorcycle for my general running around.
There is just something about getting almost 300 miles from a 4-5 gallon tank that appeals to me.

it's all money you're spending per week/month. you trade in your car that gets horrid gas milage for something new that gets 35+mpg, then you are spending much less each week just to drive. no, it may not save you money in the long run, but it helps when you don't have alot of money to live on each week, like for people that live paycheck to paycheck.
