Default first oil change at 10k?

The manual on newer hondas states not to change the first oil till 10k. I don't like waiting that long and always changed much sooner with my 2001 civic that also stated 10k. So i have no problem changing much sooner. But the manual seems to be adamant that the first change should NOT be changed till 10k. Why is this?

As parts and fluids have improved over the years, the tune-up, drain, etc. intervals have been extended. Oil is the life of the car, so personally I'd change it more frequently. The manuals provide recommendations, but I think it more about personal preference.

I just called Honda Customer Care and the rep also said 10K, but he sounded like a low-level guy and was clearly just quoting the recommendation. I asked him why the long interval and he said it was for the parts to break in, but acknowledged that an earlier change would probably be OK.

I think some of you are missing the point. I'm not worried about changing it earlier except for the INITIAL oil change. The first oil change is where they seem to say in so many words that you absolutly must go the full 10k, and i just wanna know why you can change sooner on later changes but not on the first one. It would seem to me it should be the opposite since a new car during break in is likely to shed more debris than later on when the parts have all broken in.

As for subsequent changes, i asked a rep about that when i 1st got my civic in 2001 and he said don't wait till 10k. But i never asked him about the initial change and why they are so adamant about waiting the full 10k to do it.

15quarts in a porsche?E?EEEE

Honda says 10k miles... wait 10k miles. If something bad happens, that's what the warrenty is for.

I'm sure they didn't just pull that number off a dart board at a drunken late night at the shop, just follow what they say and if there's a problem after that, then talk to them.

Honda puts a special additive in your engine oil to protect it and make sure the engine properly breaks in, a service writer told me this when I was working at the dealership at one point. It's just the first oil change. After that, your can lower your intervals to every 3k or 5k miles. It's up to you, you can have it changed earlier.
