Default Computer gurus....I need some assistance

Hi all,

I ran into this problem this morning. Safe mode and last known good configuration failed.

STOP: 0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\Systemroot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate
is corrupt, absent, or not writable

I am going to run a check disk right now...hope this will work. Dell asked me to do an HD check as well. This damn workstation gave me so many problems with file corruption lately. I think I am going to tell them to give me a new HD after this.

Thanks in advance

copy the file in the folder specified by the error from another computer onto a disk.

You'll have to use either Microsoft recovery console, or a DOS boot disk (depending on operating system) to put the files from the disk, back into the directory specified on your machine (systemroot/system32/config/...)

May or may not work, but worth a try.

well.....

support told me pretty much what I already know. The HD is trashed.

Any file recovery attempts went to crap. They are shipping me a replacement HD....crappers....I feel bad for the guy..

At least most of his stuff is saved on the share drive.

Tried that....didn't work. Bleh. I am going to take the PC with me and try anything else that comes to mind later today since I have appointments in our other offices. My main concern is to recover his files, but if I can't.....he's still ok.
