Well I wouldn't mind a factory turbo car that I can afford (WRX is too pricey for me and DSMs tend to break when you start playing with them).
I worked for VW and drove a few GTis. I don't think they handle too bad and the interior is nice. It was similar to my Honda in handling (imo).

If you like it, then buy it.

Well, with the amount of money that's gone into my mom's 99 turbo passat... I don't think I could really recommend a VW to someone unless they don't mind hidden costs

Liking the car is besides the point. I like the Skyline but I can't run out and buy it.

Anyone hear any 'interesting' things about the 1.8T and newer GTis?

My dad's had a TT Roadster since May '00. It has had a total of one problem ever, which was an interior motion sensor for the alarm that was defective from the factory. But whatever.

Oh well here I thought you were asking if you should buy a GTI.

Like what? The 1.8T's seem to be fairly trouble prone, coil pack recalls, electronic gremlins, etc. I've had friends with GTI's and Jettas with that motor that see unscheduled shop visits once a month. A lot of other people seem to back this.

I'd do VR6 or nothing on this deal...at least that motor is reliable. As for the rest of the car, step one would be buy a decent set of coilovers and maybe some strut bars.

The thing is though, the VR6 GTI's really aren't that quick. :dunno: Faster than many Honda's out of the bag, but not when comparing directly to competition. The RSX Type S comes to mind. Even the Eclipse V-6 is quicker.

The 1.8T is nice because it's easy to mod and the aftermarket HP for the dollar ratio is great. VR6 mods are expensive as hell.

Depending if you can afford the 'hidden costs' as mentioned, it's up to you.

Personally I'm not a fan of VW to say the least. :dunno:

Well there's not many other factory turbo cars I can think of that I can afford.
