Default Wet Sanding small rust spots...

I have discovered a while ago that there are grain like rust spots on my car's trunk and the rust has slowly moved up towards the front end of the car and i was told to wet sand them. I started to sand a little section on my car just to try it out and polished the spot that i sanded...the spot that i sanded came out clear and smooth becuase of the polish. Although, the spot did still looked scratched. Question(s) i have is/are: isn't the polish supposed to make the scratches fade? What about my clear coat, didnt i just sand the clear coat off? I am thinking about sanding the rest of the rust grains off and then polish and wax the car.. will this prevent the rust from comming back or even slow the down to a point where i wont see the rust for a loooooonnng time??? And Should i be using a higher grit of sand paper?

Additional info: I used 1500 grit paper. Also used Nufinish Polish. I am planning to take the car to a cousin's shop to see if i can get some kind of deal to get the car repainted..

what car is this? if you're talking about little specs, they can alll be easily removed with a clay bar.

You'd have to sand through the clearcoat to get to the rust so yea its gone. I dont think you'd have clearcoated rust in the first place anyways...
