RSX-Type-S
Hey...I have heard this car has a hard time shifting and it is very easy to mis-shift? Is that true? I mean buying a 20 something grand car and ruining the tranny easily? Can you guys fill me in on this..

Ive driven the rsx-s a few times. The shifts gates are closer than normal to each other making it more vunerable to misshift. The throw is also shorter than normal. Its that 6th gear that takes up room. Just gotta get used to it and not rape the car when shifting. Other than that its a pretty respectable car.

Shifting is very easy, you have to realize that it is a cable shift and not solid rods. This may be some of the cause of the misshifts that some people have experienced. They try to ram the shifter from gear to gear and they don't need to force it, and they are pulling and exerting pressure towards themselves and going from a higher gear to a lower gear by accident. But noone ever thinks it's their fault, they almost always want to blame Acura. Watch the guys in the WRC shifting, they hardly put any pressure on the shifter, if they use it and not paddle shifters on the steering column.
There are a few minor problems that have been encountered a grind going into second gear, and a notchiness when the car hasn't warmed up from 1st to 2nd. We have one of the earlier ones as we got our TypeS on the 7 of July 2001, our production number is below 1200. All we have experienced is the slight notchiness, and it wasn't noticeable to us until I started reading about it in all the RSX forums. My wife and I have been driving stick shifts for a lot longer than most of you have been around, as we are 50 and 52, so I think it's mostly a matter of inexperience (in years) of driving sticks.

I used to miss 3rd gear for about a week after i got it. I really just needed to sit forward more so I could reach the peddels better.

Back when they first came out I remember hearing something about 1st to 2nd, like a little click or something out of the ordinary. But, it seems as though that is taken care of. After driving import-tooner's, I couldn't see much wrong...maybe I'd have to drive it quite a bit more before I'd actually notice something though :dunno:.

I have driven it and did not have a problem at all. The shifter is very smooth. It shifts into 1st gear smoother than any other car I have driven before. I am sure if you don't know what you are doing you can miss shift but if your not a careless person or a total beginner you will not have a problem at all.

Neither I nor my g/f has ever misshifted. You do have to get used to the short throw and close gates, but its def not Acuras prob. The only thing Acura fudged was in the beginning production with notchiness going into second.
BTW. Anybody know why exactly Honda decided to make it a cable rather than rod? Is it simply to reduce vibration?
