She has a five speed, right? If she knows how to drive stick - seriously - there are a number of things to do in bad weather, and none of them involve tires or sand bags (they only work in cars like a 1974 Buick Electra ). First, engaging out of first, do it easy . She's not running a race in bad weather (or she shouldn't be, anyway), so there's no need to give the car all the rpm's when engaging the clutch. Tell her to keep it UNDER 2000 rpm's when accelerating from a stop. Also, use second gear instead of first. The engine won't have so much power applying to the tires. She should also learn to shift when the tires are spinning while she's in motion. Accelerating in fourth from 25 mph will prevent the tires from spinning as well. In other words, the opposite of normal or fast driving applies here: the lower the rpm's, the less likely she is of loosing control. She really shouldn't hit 3000 rpm in bad weather untill she's on the freeway.
