Low-cost camera w/ wide angle?

Ok your SD750 has a lens with equivalent field of view to a 35mm lens on a film camera. All of these have 24 or 25mm equivalent lenses with f/2.8 or wider apertures and image stabilization.
Panasonic FX48 - $209
12 megapixel
2.5" screen
25-125mm lens
Panasonic FX580 - $249
12 megapixel
3.0" touchscreen
25-125mm lens
Canon SD980 - $279
12 megapixel
3.0" touchscreen
24-120mm lens
Sony WX1 - $329
10 megapixel spiffy-for-a-p&s sensor that does real good in low light
2.7" screen
24-120mm lens with wider max aperture to let in more light
The two Panasonics should have basically identical image quality, the main difference is the smaller regular screen or bigger touchscreen.
The Canon should be pretty similar overall to the FX580. The lens is a tiny bit wider.
The Sony should do better image quality indoors but takes Memory Sticks instead of SD cards and is the priciest. You pay more for the IQ-related features and give up the touchscreens of the FX580 and SD980.

18mm on a DSLR is about 27mm on film. Should get you rather wider but it's not super wide. Ask if the Nikon lens is an AF-S, if so it'll work on all Nikon DSLRs.
Otherwise here's a Pentax K100D SLR and 18-55 lens from KEH for $254: http://www.keh.com/Product-Details/1...0/DP01/FE.aspx
Nothin fancy but it should serve your purpose.

I don't think there are any cameras currently on the market wider than 28mm. There are numerous aftermarket screw-in "wide-angle adaptors" (check eBay) that multiply the widest focal length by, for example, .7 or .5, but the resulting quality is quite frankly abysmal (softness, extensive barrel distortion) and they should be regarded mainly as novelty/special-effects items.
I don't know whether the Sony R1 qualifies in your eyes, but it is a very good camera (with an excellent 24-120 lens), now discontinued but available in great condition used. Except for the Leica you mention and the Epson, the R1 is the only non-SLR with an APS-C or larger sensor, so if image quality is important to you, it has an edge over point-and-shoot-sized sensors.
If you want a viewfinder camera because they're quieter than SLRs, the R1 may work for you; but if it's the rangefinder-type window that appeals to you, the R1 will disappoint, as it has an electronic viewfinder

reviving this thread because I just took another batch of shitty pics. What are your thoughts on something like this?
Would these be wide enough for my purposes? I think I'd prefer to stick with a point and shoot format rather than a real camera body since I need to leave it in my car (or pocket) most of the time and space is a little limited.
Amazon.com: Nikon Coolpix S570 12MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Electronic Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Blue): Camera & Photo
Amazon.com: Pentax Optio P70 12MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD (Silver): Camera & Photo
Amazon.com: Fujifilm FinePix S1500 10MP Digital Camera with 12x Wide Angle Dual Image Stabilized Optical Zoom: Camera & Photo

None of these would truly be a wide angle. The first two are 28mm in the short end. Wide would be like 16-18mm.
The last choice was 33mm at the short end. Not worth it

I know wide angle P&S cameras exist... I've used them before. Where/what the fack are they?!
