dslr crew: talk to me about flashes
i have a canon xt and am thinking about getting a flash to be able to do more stuff inside, other than just using a fast iso and fast aperture in lower light. any suggestions on an affordable flash for a beginner? the canon 430ex ii is ~$250, is that the cheapest i can get away with?

you want to go cheap and good go with the vivtar 285 only thing is that this flash is only manual, no auto settings. but it kicks ass and is a work horse.
other then that look for a used 430ex or just go with the 430ex II

If you want full auto features but are looking to save some cash compared to the Ganon 430 then check out either the Sunpak PZ42X or Sigma EF 530 DG ST. They don't do wireless flash and I'm not sure if you can set flash exposure compensation directly on the flash or have to do it on the camera itself, but otherwise they will give you all the light you want and still work with the camera's auto settings.
Otherwise get a Sto-Fen Omnibounce diffuser for using flash in enclosed indoor spaces. (www.stofen.com)
