Industry Sales Figures - June 2003
Honda/Acura
American Honda Posts Record Results for First Half of 2003
Torrance, Calif 07/01/2003 -- Fueled by six consecutive months of record sales and continuing strong demand for Honda and Acura light truck models, American Honda posted a new all-time record for the first six months of the calendar year with sales of 669,033 units, an 8.7 percent increase over year-ago results and a 11.5 percent rise over the previous best of 603,926, set in 2001. American Honda also set a new June record on sales of 110,290 units for the month, up 8.7 percent over the same month last year.
"We have weathered a very difficult and competitive market by playing to the strength of our products and brands," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "We see some encouraging signs that the economy may be on the upswing, but the car market will remain a tough place to compete for a some time to come."
American Honda set a new all-time record for light truck sales in June and for the first six months of 2003. Light truck sales rose 30.9 percent for the month to 43,712 units, while year-to-date results jumped 39.9 percent over year-ago records to 263,145 units, putting the company on track toward its goal of more than 500,000 light truck sales for the full year.
Honda Division
The Honda Division posted new all-time records for total vehicle and light truck sales for the first half of 2003, along with record June sales of light truck models. Honda Division year-to-date sales rose 16.4 percent to 587,665 units, besting the previous record of 519,016 set in 2001, while June sales jumped 9.5 percent over year-ago totals to 95,932 units.
All three of Honda's established light truck models - Odyssey, CR-V and Pilot - posted record June sales, while the all-new Element continues to gain momentum since its launch in December of last year. Year-to-date sales of Honda light truck models rose 31.1 percent over year-ago totals to 235,685 units.
Acura Division
Acura sales rose 3.4 percent for the month to 14,358 on the strength of the highly successful MDX luxury sport-utility vehicle and the recently launched TSX sports sedan. Acura light truck sales rose 3.5 percent over year-ago results to set a new record of 27,640 units for the first six months of 2003. Total Acura sales of 81,368 are off 5.2 percent for the year.

Quite interesting that even w/ the price hike, the Maxima is still sell as well as the older model. I guess more profit for them. Considering the Maxima and the Altima are quite similar, Altima+Maxima is not quite far behind the Camry & Accord anymore.
The ES330/300 alone does almost as well as all the variant of the C-class combined. Quite impressive.
Infiniti really need to do something w/ the Q45. The sale # is horrible.

Honda quietly vacuums up U.S. auto market share
Wednesday July 2, 5:21 pm ET
By Justin Hyde
DETROIT, July 2 (Reuters) - While many automakers have struggled for sales this year, Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (Tokyo:7267.T - News) has quietly vacuumed up more U.S. market share than any other competitor in the first half of 2003.
Honda has gained despite offering smaller average incentives than Detroit's Big Three and Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. (Tokyo:7203.T - News) and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. (Tokyo:7201.T - News). And it shows how one or two well-timed hits can boost an automaker's fortunes.
Through June, Honda had grown its U.S. market share by 1.1 percentage points to 8.1 percent, despite a weak showing by its Acura luxury unit, which has seen sales fall 5 percent. Analysts typically say just one-tenth of a market share point can mean tens of millions of dollars in additional profits.
Almost all of Honda's increase has come from two new sport utility vehicles. The Honda Element, a small SUV that Honda targeted at younger buyers, has sold nearly 35,000 copies so far this year, with little effect on sales of Honda's other small SUV, the CR-V.
But the biggest push has come from the Honda Pilot, an eight-passenger SUV that's been a smash hit with 51,183 sold through June. The $33,000 Pilot has been in tight supply since it was launched late last year; Honda dealers have about a seven to 10 days' supply, versus a typical inventory of 60 days' supply.
Honda spokesman Andy Boyd said the automaker has boosted production plans for both models and is aiming to build 70,000 Elements and 70,000 Pilots annually.
"When we launched the Pilot, we said we had 90,000 customers a year that were defecting because we didn't sell a larger SUV," Boyd said. "The Element is bringing in new buyers, and about 50 percent of Element owners are all new to Honda."
CROSSING OVER
Unlike most Detroit SUV models that are based on truck underpinnings, the Pilot and the Element are built off car frames. That makes the ride and handling of these so-called "crossover" vehicles more car-like, a trait that many buyers seem to prefer.
U.S. sales of vehicles such as the Pilot and the Toyota Highlander are up 36 percent this year, far more than any other segment. Merrill Lynch analyst John Casesa said that such crossovers are soaking up customers who might otherwise buy minivans or small traditional sport utility vehicles.
"That is a hot, hot market," he said. "That market is 56 percent Japanese (automakers), and that's one of the reasons mathematically the Japanese are gaining share this year."
While the Pilot has some foreign competitors, it has benefited in part from a lack of direct competition from Detroit's Big Three. The most comparable models are GM's Buick Rendezvous and Pontiac Aztek SUVs; through June, the Pilot had outsold both of them combined.
GM also happens to be the automaker who's suffered the steepest market share decline in the first half of 2002, losing 0.9 percentage points. While GM's truck lineup has performed strongly, its car lineup has not. It will launch a new Cadillac crossover later this year, with a Chevrolet model coming next year.
Honda's success in the United States -- the world's largest auto market -- has come as the company has struggled in Japan. Sales in the home country are down 20 percent this year due to a dearth of new models.
But analysts estimate Honda has earned 70 percent of its profits from North America over the past two years. Thanks to plant expansion, Honda will probably have more production capacity at its North American plants in Ohio, Alabama and Ontario, Canada, than in Japan by 2004, Merrill's Casesa said.

Wow, Mitsubishi, Mazda, and VWs sales are going down the drain.
Dammit Honda bring the Stream (Latitude) over here! I bet that it could easily add 3k sales a month easily and let the Civic regain its rightful place as best-selling compact.
