Default Pilot VTM and Check Engine light on!

I have an '03 Pilot w/only 40k miles on it. Was up in the gorgeous state of Maine w/the family last week when suddenly the check engine light and the VTM light went on simultaneously. Truck was running fine though. I was not 4wheeling. I continued to drive it this way for several days. Ran fine. Nearest Honda dealer was 2+ hours away (we were deep in the woods of northern maine) The VTM light would go off at times for hours, then come back on. Check engine light is always on. Decided to risk driving it from Maine back to NJ. No problem. A buddy of mine who is a Toyota mech thought it was not a big deal. Getting this thing into the dealer is a pain in the a**. Any suggestions on 1: what caused this and 2: how to resolve it?

It could be a number of things that went wrong, Your best bet, and unfortunatly not cheap is go to the dealer and get the codes read. If you get the codes, and u have some knowlegde of working on cars i might be able to help u.

I mentioned my Toyota mechanic friend. He stopped over last night w/ a diagnostic machine to "read the codes". The machine spit out the code P1491. He wasnt sure what this was, but thought maybe something simple as my gas cap leaking could have triggered the lights to come on.

I have a little over 40k miles on my pilot. I had the same exact problem this last weekend. The engine light and the VTM light came on. I thought the transmission fluid was low, so took it the dealer and had the transmission oil and engine oil changed. The VTM light, according to the service guy, comes on whenever the wheels slip and engages 4 wheel drive. I didn't tell him about the engine light, I just assumed it would go away after the trans. oil change. But it still continues.
How serious is this problem ? I have been driving around with this condition. Is there a recall on this problem ?

Thanks
Ram

Default Me Three

I am driving an '05 Pilot with just under 30K miles. Several days ago the "Check Engine" and "VTM-4" dash light became illuminated simultaneously. Brought the vehicle into my mechanic this morning. He said the diagnostic code indicated an Anti-Knock something or other (my words not his) and recommended bringing it into a dealer as it is still under warranty and he was unable to determine the underlying issue. There was no charge for their time and advise. I highly recommend this repair shop, Allens Wrench in San Marcos, CA (northern San Diego county). They have consistently provided excellent service and are able to complete repairs at half the cost of dealer service. Will post again next week with results from dealer service.

Default Resolution

It turns out that a rodent had chewed the wiring for the Anti-Knock Sensor. $445 for a new wiring harness should resolve the issue.

It is a little irritating to have rodent issues when I live in suburban San Diego and park my vehicle in my driveway. Guess I'll have to clean out the garage enough to fit a 3rd vehicle. That should take a few years

Hope this info helped someone somewhere.

The Knock Sensor Subharness Is Only Like 20 Bucks If I Remember Correctly Runs From The Knock Sensor Over To The P\s Pump

Yeah its fairly inexpensive however the upper plenum has to be taken off the motor and than its still no easy task to unclip the connector from the sensor and put in the new harness.

We typically charge 3 hours R & R labor plus 1 for diag so at 95 an hour 400.00 is around the ballpark to his 445.00
