Jun Type 3 = Skunk2 Stage 2.

Yes, the jump from a CARB legal to CARB illegal cam is just that big. Also, he has a 2.5" exhaust.

if i were to purchase stage II's (and valves/springs/retainers i know) would i be able to switch stock cams back in just for smog test and then switch the stage II's back in without having to have them re-tuned?

You'd have to have a smog tune and a stage 2 tune. Even without the stage 2 cams that tune would probably fail.

could I save two different tunes in the VAFC and write down the angles for the cam adjustment so that i could just switch them back and forth fairly painlessly?

No. You'd have to write down each and every setting for the VAFC.

For Hondata all you'd need is 2 chips. Might consider a S100.
