Default backwards muffler?

I was up under my car the other day trying to straighten out my ugly ass exhuast tips, and I noticed a little arrow on my muffler, it said "flow ---->" but guess what....it was facing the wrong way (thats why I don't let anyone work on my car but me!)

does that really make a difference? Would it affect the flow in my exhuast. I would have flipped it around right then, but the clamps that hold the pipes on had crimped them a little, and I'm scared if I take the pipes out of the muffler I won't be able to get them back on. If there is a big difference I'll probably swap it around, but is it worth it?

I know that many of the DynoMax and Flowmaster muffler have directional baffles inside of them to help direct and quiet airflow. I'm sure that other companies have similar designs.

As for the muffler application for your car, I am not sure. What brand and model muffler to you have? Many mufflers out there are simply a straight through design pack with glass wool or another sound dampener around the baffled through-pipe. SUch as this:

I really don't know what kind of muffler it is. The owner before me had a (incompetant) muffler shop put it on. Its probably some generic crap.

All I can suggest to you is that you turn it around the other direction and check for differences in sound and and any other differences you might be able to notice. Most likely it's one of those muffler styles that's fairly straight through so it shouldn't be a big deal. Take it off, look through it, if you can see through to the other side then don't worry about it.

We just got a 4Runner and noticed that it sounded loud. My dad looked under the car and thought that the muffler was on backwards. He asked the guy at the shop and the guy said that it was impossible for the muffler to even go on backwards. I'm not sure if it's the same for a Teg but maybe it's not really on backwards like you think.

If it is marked for flow, it makes a difference. They wouldn't spend the money to stamp the metal if it didn't matter.

if its stamped, it should matter...some mufflers and resonators are not "straight through"...they actually have little hoops that "grab" the exhaust flow INTO the muffler packing (aka louvered)..if your muffler is not facing the correct direction, then the exhaust flow is just being blocked by these opposite facing louvers....if your muffler is generic, it either has these louvers, or the aforementioned baffles....or even both. the direction makes a difference in both sound and performance...

thanks for your replies. I guess I'm going to try fliping it around this weekend, I just hope I can get it back on once I take it off
