Brake Job and Axxis ultimate pad review(Sort of verbose)
Completed the brake job a few hundred miles ago and thought I would let y'all know how it was. I used Axxis ultimate pads, and had the front rotors machined/turned. It was a bona fide motherfvcker getting the rotors off, had to buy an impact driver to do it(ended up having to go buy Craftsman bits for a cheapo driver I got after I broke all 3 bits that came with it.) I used my handy dandy Quik grip for the front brake calipers, the backs you have to use needle nose pliers or something to turn the piston into the caliper. I also had to adjust the handbrake, it was dragging a little too much with those nice new thick pads. I probably did not need to turn the front rotors, and I did not do the backs, just changed the pads. The brake masters that turned my rotors made a little cross hatch pattern on the thing, so I matched the backs using some 100 grit sand paper. I would recommend a decent floor jack and some jack stands, it makes the job much easier, and Kragen is always running sales on that shat. Check your fluid level, should not have to bleed the brakes if you do the job correctly
Broke the pads in like on a new car, do the gentle stops and gradual slow down for a while before you really torture test them. The feel is pretty good, they seem to progressively grab as you press on the pedal, even with the stock rubber lines. They generate a lot more braking force than the stock pads did, even when they were new. I have not tried a panic stop from triple digits, but have hauled it down from 60 in a big hurry. They grab hard, and the ABS does not cycle unless I really stand on the brakes. I will be taking a track course in the teg, now that the brakes are done, and I will be able to speak about fade resistance a bit. They dust more than the stock pads, but not obnoxiously so. I am pretty easy on brakes though, the originals lasted for 107 k miles, and the backs were not even sort of worn out. Not a scientific report, without hard numbers, but I am just too cheap to get one of those G-tech things. IF any one has one in norcal, I would be interested to see what sort of braking G's the car pulls with these brakes and tires.
