Default my a/c isnt cold..how can i diagnose the problem?

this has been happening to me the past few days. hot as hell here in jersey for the first time this summer, a few days in a row without rain..woohoo haha. so i went down the shore both days in my black car with black leather and like DIED of heat. i want my ac back. this is what was happening to me, it was turning on for like 5 seconds and then off for 5 seconds and then on, etc. the air was pretty warm. a few days ago, i recharged my freon with a 19oz bottle of freon and it didnt seem to do anything, but the gauge showed that it was in the green area meaning good, not empty and not overfilled. but it read about the same spot before and after i put the can in. do you think i need more? what should i check?

and another random thing is that tonight when it was cooler, the ac compressor stays on for longer instead of just a few seconds, and the air is cool, but not cold. durring the heat today going 80-85mph, the compressor kept clicking on and off quickly....and the air was just not cold at all. but when it was cooler out, the air was cooler but it might just have been cause it was cooler outside...any ideas?

well as far as I have read b4, a/c cools down 40 deg below ambient temp. but with the compresser going on and off. ??? Maybe the belt is slipping or old?

your compressor may be on its way out OR there is short and it keeps grounding out.

buy a kit and recharge it. you can buy one at any auto parts store for pretty cheap. after you recharge it, if it stays cool, you're OK. if it doesn't keep cool, you probably have a leak somewhere.

last summer my a/c wasn't doing squat. i recharged it and it's been fine since.

"recharge" simply means...well, recharging the A/C lines with freon.
