Help!! Integra LS 94 failed CA smog test badly.
My 94 Acura Integra (112000 miles) has been well maintained, regualr oil changes, and sorts. So today when I went for a california smog test to renew my reg. Came in for a huge shock!
The car not just failed..but failed really badly. Infact it's now on the DMV Gross Polluter list.
The visual and functional checks (including Oxy. sensor and Cat. conv.) are passed. However, the hydrocardon emissions are really high (571 ppm..twice the limit) at Idle (250 rpm). However at 2500 rpm they ar as low as 14.
I want to save myself some money and trouble. I want to know in advance what could be the prob, and how much ($$$) i am looking at, before paying for repair/disgnostics.
Help greatly appreciated!
Thx
Vic

was your cat at operating temp when they did the idle test? that would cause the HC's to rise dramatically. make sure you drive around for a bit before going to get it tested, and dont let it sit for very long once you get there.

sad thing is it is stock. ..no modifications at all. Visual inspection and func. inspection came out ok.
I did drive around a few miles before goin' in for the test (maybe should've done more)
Interesting thing is that the cat. came up PASS in their test. Dunno what tests they use..because how else is the car getting such high HCs?
Is a new cat going to hurt my pocket big time? Is it something that they can tweak..or a new one is usually the only option?

Random Technology Cat: $215
And I believe Carsound Cats are even cheaper.
