is it an auto trans? Ive heard blue smoke means transmission in an automatic...also, just installed new exhaust on my car and it smoked for a while too. I assume factory chemicals used when creating the product.

i've never heard that, i thought blue was oil. i know that blue is oil. the cat was used, no chemicals to burn off, only carbon. i'm into the top end, camshafts are out, next gotta pull the head off, i think the valve guides might be gone as well as the valve seals. theres a lil bit of play between the guide and the stem, i'm not sure how much is too much. i know that the 351M in the ol' ranchero is FAR worse on gas than the 'tegra, so i need to get this done!

could be a lot of things, you might not be getting enough oil to the head to even activate VTEC even though the ECU is allowing you to spin to nigh 8k. I highly doubt it's the exhaust but that might be it. My money would be on something going wrong with the butterfly valve on the intake. Since this is happening right around the 4500-4700 mark maybe something is stuck with that. Try disconnecting the electrical to it.

Yea, if your cat is backed up, the gases are gonna find any way out they can. Even if it means backing up into the motor through seals.

Had the top end reworked...FINALLY, the tegra is back together again, goes f-in awesome! Its been back on the road for two weeks now, but even more blue smoke!!! I suspect the top end wasn't all that bad all along now. Though compression readings were strong, I know that stopping compression and oil from slipping by are handled by different piston rings. Stupid frikkin car.

another clue if your rings are bad is having too much blowby. when you do your oil change, you should smell a bit of gasoline together with the oil your draining. but this should have showed up in the compression test.

blue smoke---oil

black smoke---fuel (check regulator)

white smoke---head gasket (coolant burning)
