Default How to break shock bolt?

I was going to re-install my stock suspension today. Everything was going smoothly until it was time to take off the top shock mount. I couldn't get the top shock bolt to break, the rod just kept spinning. I tried for quite a while to take it off, but to no avail.
If the shock is under load, will the rod still spin? Also, would it be safe to break that bolt while the shock is still under load?

if we are talking about the same rod, you need a wrench to hold the rod.

you mean separating the shock and spring assembly? You have to hold a nut while you turn a bolt otherwise it'll just spin in place. I unloaded mine very carefully into a trash can, cause once again I'm ghetto. Do so at your own risk of serious danger.

its not that hard....i just used to open end wrenches. i held the shock between my leg, and one hand on each wrench. twist opposite ways.

where do you place the open end to hold the rod?
there's no other nut that I can use like that. just the top nut that I'm trying to take off

To do it safely you can borrow a spring compressor set from your local auto parts store. Compress the spring and take all the load off the spring. Slip a open or box ended wrench (19mm i think) over the nut and insert an allen key in the shock shaft. Hold the shock shaft while loosening the shock bolt.

you said you were going to REinstall your stock stuff....so im assuming that you you have aftermarket shocks and springs right now...let me draw a pic...

on the left is the shock and the rod...on the top of the rod where the threads are is where i am assuming you are having the trouble. on my KYB shocks...where the threads are on the rod, there are 2 flat edges. thats where i put the open end wrench. then with the other wrench i undo the nut.

thanks Will...I just looked at my shocks again today, and there is a place for me to hold a wrench. for some reason I didn't notice it at all yesterday...I guess I should wear my glasses when I work on my car. h:

an impact wrench should spin it faster than the shock will.
