Question about Port & Polishing.

How much of a hp increase will I see if I get this done?

also what does it cost typically?

 

a shop near me says 300 bucks for a b series head... and your gains are dependant on what other modifications you have

 

$300 for the whole job sounds very cheap.

Usually a good head job (sounds funny I know) can run $800 to $1500. I would not bother unless it's part of an engine build and you're gonna have the motor apart anyway. It could add about 10 hp or so to a built motor, but that's about it. If you're looking for the "next thing to do" for your car I would suggest some cams.

what does port and polish mean or what does it do?

 

porting refers to enlarging the intake and exhaust ports and polishing smoothes the surface so that the exhaust flows smoother. Typically the job also entails porting the intake manifold and smoothing out the valves. I did mine last summer for free with a dremel tool (i do NOT recommend this if you aren't experienced) with my dad and my gains were rather minimal. Of course this wasn't a perfect job but it still made a very slight difference. I don't think it's worth spending a lot of money on unless you're really built though

 

Boosted motors [turbo, super] see more gains from p&p then n/a motors. Same with bigger motors [v8].

 

That's because P&P can easily be seen as flow gains, which give you a percent increase rather than a static number.

 

a friend of mine who runs a small P&P business on the side for V6 and V8 Mustangs offered to do my TB and intake for free. Only cost of parts and a large pizza. He's gotten rave reviews from everyone who's had it done. Good idea?

 

Mustangs have been known to gain up to 40hp from a head job, their heads are much worse from the factory than ours, so our gains will be a lot smaller
