Horrible Grinding/Vibration From Shifter at Hig RPM's
Ok, so I have a *new* problem. Yes, I did search (new search function is awesome btw). I did not find any thing pertaining to my problem, so I had to make this thread.
I haven't beat on the car in a while, so this didn't come up until tonight. I was on the highway, it was 2am, nothing in sight, what would you do? lol
I slowed down, down shifted through the grears, got to about 45mph in 2nd, and I did a pull. By the time I got to 7000 rpm, there was a horrible grinding noise coming from the shifter itself. I put it in 3rd, got to the 7000 rpm range again, same shit. So I pull over, shut the car off, and go through the gears. They feel fine, so I get back on the highway. As I was going through the gears (shifting about 3-5000 rpm), shifting in and out of the gears was fine, and the shifter was not gringing. The tranny has never grinded a gear, unless it was a mistake of my own. The only thing I've done in a while to the shifter/tranny is put the Energy Suspension bushings in, after that shifter feel was soooo better. The tranny fluid (Honda MTF) was refilled about 4000 miles ago.
So my problem is:
The gear lever/shifter is grinding. It's not the tranny, just the shifter. While the grinding happens, the tranny still shifts in and out of gear smoothly. It happens in gear while driving, in nuetral while coasting, clutch pressed down, or not, still doing it. It also does it at a stop while in nuetral. Bascially, the shifter itself grinds no matter what the car's doing at 7000 rpm all the way to redline. the grinding will go away if I push the shifter to the right a little bit while it's grinding.
If some one can please shed some light on this, it would be very greatly appreciated.
Thanks

what kind of shifter is it, sounds like it could be linkage/bushing/shifterbushing related

It's the stock OEM daul-bend shifter, with a GSR leather knob. I changed out the shifter bushings last week with the Energy Suspension parts.
I got the car in the air and none of the bolts are loose, and nothing looks out of place. Some one suggested the exhaust is hitting the linkage, but the exhaust hasn't changed since I had got the car last November. The clearence to the exhaust and linkage are over 2" apart, so I don't think they can touch.
I'm getting to the point where I want to leave the keys in the car and let it get stolen to collect the insurance.

maybe its because you JUST changed the bushings out last week, that something changed.
those hard bushings transfer some mean resonance to the shifter, my old short shifter rattled like ass on the freeway.
before you go claiming insurance, change out the bushings for the stock ones, and see if it still makes noise.

it is your engine vibration from the connecting rod. sounds like the stiffer bushings caused the O-rings on the bottom of the shifter to absorb more vibration.
jack up your car, locate bottom of shifter, locate connecting rod, and about six inches away give it a shake. if you can hear it then you need new O-rings.
if you can't, then you still need new O-rings.

Connecting rod? I hope you're not talking about the piston's connecting rod.. Do you mean the shift linkage rod? And what O rings? The rubber seals for the shifter inside of the car? If so, that does make sense. I'm going to order the new rubber seals/O rings since mine are beat and torn any way.
When I jacked the car up yesterday and was poking around, the linkage did seem to have some play in it.
Thanks

yes, the shift linkage rod. the bottom one. there's two. i dunno know the names of one, but the bottom one that connects to the bottom ball of the shifter. it's got play, it's probibly enhanced when its vibrated 4000 times a minute. the o-rings that connect the bottom ball of the shifter to the shift linkage rod. inside. then, a bolt goes through it all and gets tightened up. i would say that.
