The alarm goes off, but think about this:
When i bought my alarm a friend of mine (kind of a shady one) bet me that he could get in my car without the alarm going off and i said sure. He coat hangered the chrome lock switch on my car and then readied himself, he quickly opened the door, popped the hood and yanked the positive lead off of my battery, all before the alarm got through it's warning beep sequence, i went back to my shop that day and bought a back-up battery.
With two people in under 20 seconds thieves can:
Remove all cd's/radar detectors/LCD Screens/laptops/any other loose valuables in your car
Remove any CD player not bolted onto the car
Remove any non mounted amps/subs in your trunk
And in most cases (as most security systems do not have battery backups) just pull your positive lead from your battery and disable your alarm.
You will realize what is going on in around 15 seconds
spend another 15 thinking about a course of action (do the thieves have guns etc...), and spend prob 15sec to 30sec gettin you butt out the door, by the time you get near your car, they will be gone, with all of your goodies.

DVPGSR: Don't rely on your alarm going off if a door is opened... I found a very easy way to open my car's door for as long as I like without the alarm going off or having to tamper with anything. It should work on many cars, but it is very easy to do on a 3rd gen Integra. It affects any alarm that does not immediately go off when a door is opened; most alarms either wait a second or give warning chirps while a door is open before going off. My cheap alarm only waits a second before going off, but I was able to sucessfully do this trick on my first try. The ironic thing is that the alarms that give warning chirps (like Viper's) are actually more vulnerable to this.
I don't want help any thieves, so I wont give the details, but let's just say that you shouldn't trust your alarm to go off when a door is opened. The defense to that trick is backup intrusions sensors. I think one of those interior motion (aka field) sensors should work.

This is all good information we are getting here. After my clears got taken last night I am definately getting a new alarm and other goodies. The more I learn here the better it will make my decision when the time comes...barring funds. BTW if my alarm self arms itself the doors do not lock and if I open them the alarm goes off right away. I wish I knew what kind of an alarm it is...anyone know how to tell?
Thanks for all the advice.
