i didnt use spacers in my fronts... just cut the plastic thing out.... and i NEVER had any water problems in that car, my civic, or my g2 integra - all of which i have used the same kind of speakers and cut the plastic out of.... never had any problems with them hitting the doors with bass ... never modified the door... JL Audio VR-650-CX (i used for fronts in my civic - also used in my integras but in rear) for my integras, i used JL Audio XR-650-CS and they have a larger cone and magnet than the VR's did... big mf'ers in both cases so id say go with the 6.5's and get wahtever speaker you most like...

For the front, you can do a couple of things.

1. Cut the back of the basket thingie out and put whatever kind of 6.5" that you want in, as long as the front doesn't stick out too much.

2. Get woofers with Neodymium magnets (they're really really really small) and they'll fit inside the basket without a problem. This is what I did.

or make a baffle between the speaker and the black thingy. that should allow a speaker with a deeper mounting depth.

I have 6 1/2 Infinity Kappas running all around in my '96 two-door. They fit fine.

Yeah, the component system. I'm no audiophile or anything but they sound really crisp on the high end and the low end bass is more than sufficient. I know they have much more potential but I'm just running them off my aftermarket HU.

You have to cut the plastic thing and make a custom spacer, unless you want to cut at your door. So make sure you do your homework on the EXACT dimensions of the front speaker you would like to use.
I just pulled my speakers and replaced them. It's 6.5" all around. I also put Type-R components in the front. 6.5" doesn't refer to the depth of the speaker; it's the diameter. The Type-Rs are some really deep speakers though. I've got about 1.5" of spacer in there to make them fit.

you can't fit good speakers in the back panels unless you modify the basket, the stupid vents won't fit back in (this is a coupe though)
