I guess getting the bypass valve would be a good investment and it'll give you peace of mind.
As far as installing it...it should take you about 30 min or so....not too hard. Do yourself a favor though if you get the bypass valve....MEASURE and MARK before cutting....hehehe

i have an aem cai, and i now wish i had gone comptech instead. i have not hydrolocked but i have such bad luck with my car it scares the sh!t out of me when it rains. i would have gotten a comptech pipe and probaly a hks filter to make a short ram instead. but i do love the whistle my aem makes.
they are very easy to install(make sure you don't accidently pull on coolant lines though)
wana buy mine

the piping for the aem cai should be 2.5" i think, not too sure. Had the aem cai, had to cut like 3/4 inch off in the middle of the pipe to put the bypass value up. Dont expect much power gains other than it gets really loud. The BPV robs a lot of power.

the install is really easy. and you dont need the bypass valve, just watch where you are driving in the rain. im lowered about 2.5 and have my aem cai and i haven't had any problems with it, just dont be an idiot and drive through huge puddles, you can easily avoid them. just my .02 though

if lived somewhere where it rained alot(like washignton) i would go ahead and buy the comptech ice box instead..or maybe consider the bypass valve, cuz i got to admit i love the aems whistle, if i reallly wanted a cai.
i want a short ram now anyway so..

Bypass is a waste of money like everyone said...the only way it properly works is if your filter is completely submerged underwater...i have a aem cai and haven't hydrolocked ....but i live in dallas where it hardly rains...but when it does...it pours...just avoid the big puddles and drive responsibly..

Until someone proves otherwise (and this has been posted in another thread) the ONLY way to hydrolock your engine is if your filter is COMPLETELY submerged.
If your filter is partially submerged, will your engine still suck up water or will it suck up air through the other half of the filter that's exposed to air? Again, physics tells me one thing. If you have experienced otherwise then by all means go ahead and share. But until then, the bypass valve is totally and entirely effective in safeguarding your engine against the #1 cause of hydrolock, and that is to have the filter completely submerged.
Like I said before, for the price of a AEM CAI AND the bypass valve, just get the icebox extension + foam filter and be done with it. Or go with a nice J's racing intake or some other shortram if you can't decide.
