Default Fluid change help

Recently went to get my 60k inspection on a 2001 gsr. dealer said that the transmission fluid and power steering fluid should be changed. Is this do-able at home? the tranny fluid seems like it would be pretty straightforward but am not sure about the power steering.

I wouldn't even worry about the p/s fluid just buy some Honda p/s fluid and top it off if need be. The transmission fluid is as easy as draining and refilling it. Just buy 2 quarts and some drain plug washers from the dealer and you should be set. The transmission has a drain plug and a fill plug, the fill plug is above the drain plug obviously. When you fill the tranny just fill until the fluid starts to dribble out of the fill hole and when it stops then it's topped off and screw the fill plug back on.

agreed. sounds like the dealer was looking to make some money.

as long as the p/s fluid is as the proper level, you should be fine.

otherwise, when you fill the tranny fluid as joe describes, make sure the car is as level as possible.

dealer said the power steering fluid was darker than it was supposed to be and should be replaced. Sounded either bogus or atleast easy enough to do at home. thanks

The only way to replace all of the fluid with new stuff is to flush the system out with a special machine. Even then it still won't get everything out, you'll still have dark fluid even after the "flush." Just top it off and you'll be fine. Just make sure you don't have any obvious leaks that make the level drop.

And Honda's use oil in the tranny, not fluid.
