living in canada the mornings are starting to get colder and colder as we reach december. Just wondering what some of the thoughts are on warming up the car for like 5 mins before u leave, or just start it and go very slow.. asked a few people and got a lot of different answers..

 

good question. It started getting cold here as well in the mornings so I am also interested in what is best to do.

 

A lot of people think different things...

I prefer to sit in the car and let it idle for a minute or two. Then just keep the revs under 3k until its warmed up a bit. Theres a bunch of different theories on this...I tend to think this is a good medium and makes the most sense.

 

This is what I have been doing. By the time I get to the highway entrace ramp my car is fully warmed up.

 

I have also heard that your vtec cams will not engage until the car is warmed up to a certain point allowing for unrestricted oil flow to your engine internals.

A lot of people running sp00m theromostats and such are having trouble keeping the car at normal operating temperature when DRIVING during the winter. h:

I press the remote start button a few minutes prior to going out.

 

I been told and read this in a magazine awhile back that the car should be warmed up for at least 30sec to a min and slowly drive the car. It is bad for the car to idle for a long time. I always let the car warm up until the frost and some snow are melted from the windows, front and back then i drive. No use driving blind.

 

VTEC will not engage until your car is at normal operating temperature. I believe its your water temp that the ECU reads.

 

**** Ididnt know vtec doesnt engage until the car is warmed up. be stupid to even think of going past 5000 right when u start the car anyways.. . so just idle for a min or 2, and stay under 3k. .got it.. thanks

 

if i lived in a colder part of the country, i would just invest in a remote start unit.
