Poor gas mileage on my new purchase
#11
Well I used the Honda top end cleaner today, changed fuel filter and got a aem filter on my aem sri (used to have some cheap bs filter before)... Now I just have to drive it and see if anything improves. I'm going to do cap and rotor, spark plus, wires, pcv, timing belt (just because its at 105,000 miles and never had it done) and water pump.

Well, its still wasting a lot of gas. I just checked the injectors and cosmetically they look perfect (no cracks, buildup...). I also changed the oil, oil filter, and sprak plugs yesterday.

Yeah, I just bought a 96 LS, and I too have noticed the gas mileage being kind of bad (im used to my 93 civic si )
I got it two weeks ago, and the guy put new plugs, distributor, and a whole tune up, and everytime he had an oil change he just got a whole tune up so it theoretically should be fine.. Maybe its my filter or something?
I'd try to drive let erratic but my first gear feels kind of weird, like i have to get over a little hump in the road before it goes or ill stall.. maybe my civic clutch was just too light?
Edit: I forgot to point out i'm borderline 200k miles, and since it's an LS, no vtec

I've been trying not to drive hard. On my last tank, I filled it up to 3/4 full, and I got 235 miles. Is that good? I just filled up yesterday to the max, so now I'm going to see how much I really get to a full tank.

I dunno how BIG of a diff it makes but i noticed with my civic if you always only fill it to half thats less water weight on the car, so technically you should get a TINY bit more MPG, at least it seemed like it did..

its could be something as a lazy o2 sensor. but i would do a compression test both wet and dry and a leak down test to test the mechanical part of the engine. You already did the basics i understand and should have cleaned up all the crap that you have in the valves. Also consider valve adjustment. O hey, any problems with the idle PRM?

dry compression was at 180 +- one or two all accross. But it doesn't matter anymore, the car is totaled. Thanx for the help guys.
