Default oil level

New integra lx owner. The dealer changed the oil when i bought the car. When i checked the oil level a couple of weeks later, I noticed that the oil level was above the second line. I thought that they were such dumb ^%*.
I just changed my oil myself and made sure that I drained it completely and filled it with 4 quarts. The dipstick is reading in the same spot, about a 1/4 inch above the second line. What is up with this?

How much was it above the line? Was car level? Also check the manual to make sure it actually takes 4 qts.

I put about 4-4.2 in at every oil change and no problems. Read the owners manual, it has the oil capacities in it.

The car was level and sat over night. The manual says 4.0 us quarts.

I sometimes have inconsistent level readings on my dipstick. Did you run the motor and then let it sit for a couple minutes before checking? It could be that all the oil is in the oil pan, especially if you let it sit for a long time while draining.

could be the wrong dipstick or the plug on the stick is messed up. check where the oil is after adding your 4.2 quarts and running the motor for a bit. That is your new fill point.

I drove the car after changing oil. I checked the next morning on level ground after wiping the dip stick. The dip stick looks ok, can't tell if it is the right one.

Just checking, you changed filter as well correct? A couple of things to consider, even on a lightly inclined ground the oil level will change, some garages are inclined slightly you just can't see it. I always put in less than 4 qts, because you can't drain all the oil out. How much is the level over the line? Another possibility is the oil pan could be dented.
