I highly doubt it's you exhaust. Yes they sometime backfire but they don't do that when your car is in cruise control and i've never heard of that.
Can you tell where the noise is coming from? (front,rear, you dont know?)

It sounds like it's coming from the front of the car in the engine. But every one I've talked thinks its a exhaust leak?
