Default Defogger help

I'm trying to spruce up my daughters 91 teg and have a question about the defogger. Either it is not working properly or I'm too stupid to figure out how to use it

This is what I do to try to get it to work. I turn on the A/C, turn the switch to outside air, then I press the defogger button on the unit. I see a light come on temporarily then it goes off and virtually no air is pushed out of the windshield vents.

However, when I switch to combination (where part air is coming out of the bottom vents and part is coming out of the windshield vents) it appears to work. Unfortunately sometimes you need a full blast on the windshield to keep from fogging up.

Anyone have any pointers? Am I doing something wrong or do I need to a new heater unit? Thanks for the help.

Does the AC work? The defroster will not function properly if the AC is not charged.

A/C works; no problem there. I believe I have tried while the car was moving. I will give it a try and see if that makes a difference.

Sounds like you've got two issues happening here.

1st in that the diverter motor that sends the air either to the windshied/vents/floor is not functioning properly. I've heard that the resistor bank that controls this may be the cuprit. I've had this same problem for years on my 92. I have to leave the button depressed on floor/windshield for a few days before it decides to kick in. Then I leave it alone for the winter.

2nd your A/C might not be working properly. If you put it on recirculate and run the A/C for a bit even if the air is going to the floor it will eventually get rid of the fog on the inside of the windshield.

yeah with that light going out it is probably the diverter motor. could be something mechanically wrong with it. does it switch from feet to front ok?

A/C conditions the air (dries it) so the defrost will work better... it does work without a/c but only on the heat setting, and it's fuking miserable to ride around for example when it's raining and wet outside and have to have the heat all the way up to use the defrost... Try this - next time your windows get fogged, turn on the defrost and run it for a few mins without the heat turned up... next, hit the A/C button and watch the fog start to disappear... actually most a/c systems now days are linked to the defroster to kick on whenever you select defrost... also, if you keep it on recirc instead of fresh air, you're just recirculating the moist air in the car instead of fresher, drier air from outside and that's why it doesn't work as good and why on some cars, you can't even select defrost and the recirc/max mode @ the same time... hope this helps a little

I always heard the AC helps remove the moisture from the air, this is why it's automatically turned on with the defroster.

I'm willing to bet that under certain conditions, your's would work better if you had AC.
