Default rough idle at startup

1989 Integra LS

My idle is rough at startup - with rpm needle bouncing around. However, once it is warm and I stop at a light, the idle is steady. I just did a tune up (new plugs, wire, dist. cap and rotor, and PCV valve).

What could be the problem? How do I test??

If you were going to say all that why not just repost what he said?

so you guys can learn how to use the search function. Plus I recently had to do reply to the same type of question and it was my thread so I remembered the name.

Thanks. I did a search and did find some hints.

Although idle is quite steady after warmup, it still tends to fluctuate a little bit, and a little bit more when I add a load: blinker, brake, fan.

Any additional hints with this information?

By the way, does a 1989 Integra have a FITV (Fast Idle Thermal Valve) or a IACV (Idle Air Control Valve)? My Haynes does not mention such components.

I don't think my car has those components.

My rpm needles bounces around erratically like there is a loose wire somewhere bouncing with the vibration of the motor. The speed is not loping.

Around my belt area I notice on startup a lot of noise - like loose bearings or bearings ready to go. The water pump has only about 15k on it. However, once warmed up the noise goes away. What can that be?

I have read in another forum for another type of car that a O2 sensor can cause this. Any experience with honda/integra?

How about when you use your lights and radio?

Have your alternator and battery checked, its possible that the ignition system isn't getting enough power, or a ground strap isn't connected.

If your hearing a squeeling sound, check the belt's tension & integrity.

If you're getting an inconsistant idle when the break is applied, could possibly be vacum also.
