My 3rd grinds also. I thought it was my clutch so I changed it and bought an ACT street strip clutch and its still grinding at over 4 grand. I figure it's the tranny so I plan to swap that out. I'm looking to get a GSR or ITR tranny.

uhh damn, why didnt you think of the Syncro's man, i will 1st get the cheaper part,$150 if that doesnt fix it then i will spend $300-500 on a clutch, if it was only one gear that grinds they told me that it might be your Syncro not your clutch. have you regulary changed your tranny. fluid.

I was planning to change the clutch and flywheel in the first place because it was a stock clutch with about 120k miles on it. I thought that would have solved the problem but I guess not. My car now 150k miles on, so wouldn't it be better if I changed the tranny anyway? Its a 97 RS. What do you think?

My third gear also just started grinding, when I am pushing it. I have a new clutch that is going to be installed. According to my repair manual it may be 1 of 5 things. 1. The clutch release system. On clutches with a mechanical or cable linkage, check the adjustment. Adjust the clutch pedal to have 1 inch of free-play at the pedal.
2. If the clutch release system is hydraulic, check the fluid level.
3. Synchronizers maybe worn.
4. Synchronizer sleeve worn.
5. Gear engagement dogs worn or damaged.

hey thanks for the info man, really usefull, i know now what it is, its not the Syncros, my mechanic didnt do an full fluid service on my car, i told him change all the fluids, well he only changed the oil, did not change the clutch fluid. i put some in this morning and after like 5-10 minutes it stoped happening, lucky me saved a bunch of money.
