Default A few questions...

Hey everybody, im new to this site. Just had a few questions because i'm still baffled on what to do to my 99 GSR. I've had it for about a month and have been wanting to put intake. Since i want the J's Racing Intake, i have to swap my intake manifold. Well i was thinking of putting the Blox Intake Manifold but im confused. Some sites say that its a swap and it uses all factory sensors and hoses and stuff so i dont have to buy anything for it... but i came across a DIY and some guy said he had to buy bolts and he had to chip his ecu and all this stuff.... do i really have to chip my ecu for this modification? And if i do swap it, do i have to install the J's Racing Intake right away because of its different shape or can i still use my OEM tubing for a while, while i buy the intake. Thanks for your help guys.

The throttle body position differs about 3 inches between the stock and Blox/Skunk2 manifold. You may have issues getting the stock airbox to fit the new manifold, but it can be done.

A chipped ECU is highly recommended because the vtec engagement should be changed for maximum power since the IAB's are eliminated. Your current ECU is worthless, though. You will need an OBD1 P72, P28 or P30.

For the manifold swap, you will need an ITR throttle cable, ITR throttle cable bracket, and a non-GSR throttle body pulley. All the hoses and sensors transfer over.

I would really recommend against the manifold until you have upgraded cams because you will see a decent loss in low end power with just the manifold on a stock engine.

Here is a very good writeup for the install: http://technet.ff-squad.com/how-to/sk2im/

hmmm.... well maybe i shouldnt swap my intake manifold at this time.... What does anybody suggest is a good first upgrade for my car, not having to convert to OBD1 just yet... and something that wont trigger my CEL.

you see me i upgraded the cams but still have my stock ITR mani, uncle suggested it, said the same thing Schmoo did, in a few weeks i might consider geeting the Skunk2 mani, why dont you just upgrade the vavle train, and get the mani.... whats your budget anyways....

So you think my first modification should be my cams?? will that trigger my cel? or will i have to go obd1 doing that?? My budget right now is actually about $1,800. What do you think i should spend it on.... i was thinking suspension (coilover kit) and whatever else.....

i would use about all of that into a nice suspension setup a coilover kit most people here would recamend groundcontrols w/ koni and buy strut bars save the rest of the money for a upgrade later

Do you have an ITR or GSR ? Skunk2 & blox are "ITR Replicas". They remove the IAB setup for GS-R's. Thus if you already have an ITR manifold, its pointless to get a Skunk2 or blox.

Original question. If i were you, i wouldn't install an IM until you have a reason to move your power band torwards redline.

I have a 99 GS-R.... a big reason why i wanted to get the blox manifold (ITR replica) was to get the J's racing intake... it only fits on ITR/replica of the type R's manifold.... wont fit on the GSR one. But i see i would have to get my ecu chipped and i would have to get cams and all that.... so i guess i can wait on that and just keep my K&N drop in for now....

To begin modifying my engine, should i start with the basic headers and exhaust???
