how can i tel just from the motor?

The vin number is one way you can tell, I don't know if you found a vin plate anywhere on the motor. What does the distributor look like? One plug/Two plugs, square plugs/circular plug.

the obd1 c1's came with an oil cooler, it would be attached under the oil filter

It can be OBD1 or OBD2. It depends on what distributor/wiring harness/ecu is used. By default, a 94-95 GSR motor will be OBD1 and 96-01 will be variants of OBD2. You may adapt any B18C1 to use wichever you want to use. (All 92-95 Hondas and Acuras are OBD1).

If the motor is pulled out you can determine by the following factors, as long as it has not been converted:

What is the serial number directly under the engine code?
What year does it say on the front of the head, next to the P-72 stamp ?

:werd: had a 98 gs-r and was OBD-II........but i had alot of engine work and supercharged b18c1 using obd-I with the hondata s200
