$500 to clean piston rings?
So I have an '01 GS-R with 114k that's been drinking a lot. 5qts of Castrol GTX 10W-30 high mileage in the last two weeks to be exact. My rear bumper is covered in oil splatters above the exhaust and I've read that it's more than likely my piston rings or valve seals. Now I haven't performed either a dry/wet compression test nor a leakdown test, but my mechanic said that in his experience with Hondas, it's more than likely one of the above two reasons as well. He said he'll put the rings in a solvent bath for about two days to clean them if they don't need to be replaced.
My questions: is $500 for that service worth it? Should I have the dry+wet CR test and the leakdown test done before he opens up the engine? More than likely I'll have him perform those tests because I don't have the equipment.
edit- I forgot to mention that I have NOT been using VTEC in the last two weeks because of the oil problem. At least I still get 320 miles to the tank..
He also said it's about a week downtime. Does that seem right to you guys? Or would you recommend me asking for another opinion?

Wow to tell you the truth that seems a lil expensive, i got mechanics here in St.Louis who can do it for $200, i would rather buy new rings and have them installed, why re-use when you can buy new ones, just a thought.

What do you have done to this car? 114k on an 01 is high IMO. Anyways, 500bucks for a cleaning on used pistions rings is astronomical. So he is gonna labor to take the old rings out, clean them and put them back in? It is way cheaper to just get new rings. Maybe I am missing something here. You sure you don't mean 50 dollars?

The car is bone stock. I know it's really high mileage for an '01, but it was more of an impulse buy >.<
He said it's the labor that makes it so expensive. And yes, that's 5-HUNDRED bones T_T
How long do you figure it cost to take out and put in a motor? About 2-3 hours at $70/hr plus cost of new rings right? I knew something was fishy when he quoted me $1019 for an OEM cat!

He said 1 in 40 has to be replaced in his experience. The others he just cleaned of the carbon build up and whatnot and it's still good.
As for the cat, he recommended finding an aftermarket one for half the price, but told me what an OEM one would cost in case I was one of those types that has to have everything OEM. Probably got that from me buying a used GS-R with high mileage because it's stock =p
Anyone care to share the part number or a link for new rings with prices? ^^
