So what good does this seafoam additive do? What is the purpose?

 

I believe it's supposed to clean out carbon deposits.

 

^ that's right... it basically goes through and cleans out dirt and debris in the system.... tends to ruin o2 sensors from what i've heard... but does wonders to injectors. it's cleaning properties are shown by the black smoke pouring out of the exhaust (carbon) then your car will level out and all is well

 

WOW ok so this turned out interesting, I got to the bottom of this problem. So I did the timing belt last weekend and I had a suspision that the timing was off (funny noises weird ideling ect.) and so I wasn't sure so I did this sea foam thing and then the check engine light turned on (I thought beacuse of somthign the sea foam did) well it turns out that the light was on because it was telling me that my timing was off! the sea foam must of cleaned alot of stuff and sensors beacuse all of a sudden the motor knew the timing was off! I took off the vaulve cover and adjusted the echuast cam 1 tooth and boom! all problems were fixed and the light turned off without reseting anything! SEA FOAM IS RAD!

 

dude, seriously wtf. your car isnt supposed to shut off when you pour it in, if it does it means you fucked up something or poured it in too fast/poured too much in. You put 1/3 of the bottle in, most people don't realize this and pour half or more in at a time; its not a fuel tank so take your time. You're pouring a liquid into a chamber with moving parts and if you just go pouring the contents in right away you're going to pretty much hydrolock the motor. You have to pour the 1/3 of the bottle which is like 5.3 ounces or something like that and than shut the car off for 5 minutes and restart, beat the hell out of it til it stops smoking. Im glad to hear you fixed the problem but be careful using seafoam, as it can kill an engine not help it.

 

If his timing was a tooth off, it wouldn't surprise me if the car shut off when the seafoam got in there.

 

ive never heard of putting seafoam in the throttle body, but i have heard of it being put into the crank case.

 

um ur wrong. i use seafoam on a near monthly basis through my tank and about once every three months thru the vaccuum lines. yes it will kill your motor when u suck it in thats what its supposed to do. dont believe me? ask a seafoam rep if u know one, when i first started carrying the product in my store the rep did exactly that and explained to me to let the motor die out and then wait roughly 45 minutes and then proceded to start the motor. thats straight from the reps mouth.

 

light does not come on everytime, but it can occasionaly. def not the norm though

That's straight off the website, i highly doubt they would tell people to hydrolock their motors on purpose. I'm not here to argue but if i spot bullshit im going to call it. You can continue to kill off your engine slowly if you want but don't go telling other people to follow your example just because "it works" and a rep supposedly told you so. whoever told you that needs a serious job evaluation.
