what ive found seems to be use regular if you cant find anything else, however the cost difference is not worth it. the car will run slower, knock upon starting, get worse mpg, all for a small sum saved. also, if the car doesnt require it, its not worth using.(according the consumer reports)
recently, im not sure about where you guys live, but around here stations have been upcharging for premium! the gap between 87 and 93 can be as much as 30-40 cents some places! it makes me go to Hess.
I love Hess, since they moved in they make the mobil across the street actually have reasonable, sometimes cheaper-than-Hess prices!

Running a higher octane gas than is needed may also hurt performance as the engine won't be able to fully burn the gas... hence wasting the gas you paid extra for.
Some common misconceptions amongst car guys...
Louder is faster
A huge cam or cams will make huge power on a stock engine
Higher octane gas means more performance and more mpg
