Default cams for gsr

im thinking of gettin cams for my 98 gsr im a little confused about what to get, some of my buddy's say to go with stage 2 cams and put a chiped obd1 comp in. im not sure what type i should get, i use this car everyday and i just want like 10 - 20 hp gains.which company should i go with toda, skunk 2, or cower and should i go with stage 1 or 2. also im gettin springs retainers and gears. any help would be great.

Throw in a CTR intake cam and call it a day. After adjusting the valves ofcourse...you'll get about 10-12hp, be able to maintain yout stock rev limiter, valves, springs and retainers.

I highly doubt it is that much, especially if you keep the stock intake manifold. I probably got more than 10-12 hp out of the CTR cam swap, but I am also boosted and have proper tuning and a better flowing manifold.

Stage 2 cams are good, but you won't see the best gains from them without a better flowing manifold, higher compression, and some method of tuning. They will give you the gains you want with stock compression, but to have them idle and function correctly, they will need some way to modify the stock fuel maps and vtec engagement point.

well i want to rev it out higher thats what the chiped obd1 comp is for so maybe ill just go with the toda spec A2 (stage 1) cams, vavle springs and gears, that alone should give a good 15+ hps. what do u think

Ok, so it was a crappy guestamation. What, 8hp? that was my original thought, but I wanted to give the CTR's more credit.

you are going to need, to do some bottom end work to run more aggresive cams, then lets say itr/ctr cams, or skunk2 stage 1 cams (not sure about other specs but i have ran these cams) the reason u need to do bottom end work is A. u won't make power reving to 9000 billion rpms with stock compression, B. you won't get the benifet and could loose power throught the power band with more aggresive cams then the ones i stated above without some bottom end work.. SO basically if you want something that you can more or less drop in, get a skunk2 intake, some skunk2 stage 1 cams, and a VAFC and call it a day! i had it in my car, and it ran great, you won't gain 15 whp but it will defin feel a difference..

Why? Unless you replace the springs/retainers I wouldn't push past the OEM rev limit. Additionally, the only time you want to touch the OEM rev limit is when you are actually on a dyno and are making power past that point. Otherwise, you're not making any more power and you're putting unnecessary strain on your motor. Build it, learn more about what you're doing, and then start pushing the envelope.

With just the intake cam you could see up to 6 hp gains. Both of them will probably yield 8-10 hp with a better manifold and a VAFC.

I wouldn't just swap them in, but that's just me. I'd put cam gears on as well and dial them in for optimum performance gain on the dyno. But, again, that's just me...
