Need expert opinion on this car I'm buying
Well I sort of already bought the car, paid the down payment, just not the full installment. It looks like a really clean car, but has some confusing background history and sort of conflicts with what the owner says.

I was getting tired of trying to find a 4 Door GSR and this one looked perfect so I jumped on it before anyone else did, may have been a bad decision but I'm stuck with it. He says its a Salvage title, that it was not in an accident and was recovered from theft.
I live in Oklahoma so I havent gotten to see the car or test drive it yet. I am going to do so this weekend with a friend that is going with me that knows alot more about these cars than I do.
Basically the carfax report shows it had 2 owners. It was originally a corporate fleet vehicle. It was then transfered to another owner in 2000. Towards the end of 2005 a salvage title was issued. Here's where it gets confusing: the owner says it was a theft car, no accident, the carfax reports it in broad terms as: "Severe accident or Total Loss Event" Now that could mean theft, but, CO does not issue salvage titles for theft vehicles, from what carfax says.
The owner didnt say anything about an accident, says it was not invovled, it was theft recovery. He put seats and rims on it from another GSR I'm assuming. From the pictures the car looks pristine. My friend and I are curious about the GSR sticker that is usually on the rear bumper of the cars. If it was in an accident and replaced the sticker would no longer be there. He says usually no one takes the sticker off because its such a pain in the ass, and this one is missing so we are wondering why.
So I've been trying to figure out, was it really theft, or was it an accident, or was it stripped in the salvage yard after the accident.
Basically if I dont see anything wrong with it and it drives nice and has no problems I will complete the purchase.
Dont rag on me if you think I'm a fool for buying it, just let me know what you think.
Thank You

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with carfaxes, but my '92 civic was given a salvage title due to theft. My car did not receive a single dent, it wasn't even stripped all the way, but its now salvage. I don't know how it comes up in a carfax.
For the dohc vtec badge that comes on GSRs, I would't be to worried about it. I recently bought a 95 gsr without that emblem, but thanks to the link below about vin #s, I verified that it was an original GSR. I would check the vin on the door-jamb and on the dash too, and title of course.

The car looks good, I hope its a good one.

Thanks for the link. That does verify some things for me. While we were already fairly certain about most of it, we werent worried about the GSR sticking not being there in the fact that it might not be a GSR.
We were wondering if that maybe it got hit in the ack and the bumper had to be replaced. Do alot of people take off the stickers? How hard is it to do so without messing up the paint and such?

Mine came without the badge and you could never tell it had one before. I know here in Southern California, many people remove it to TRY to keep the thives away, and to not stand out. my three friends removed theirs and there was no damage left. I would have removed mine if it had one anyway.

The 94 GSR sedans were not badged. And I wouldn't worry too much about that car. I bought my sedan with 195K miles on it several years ago one November, then let it sit until the following June when I took it on a roadtrip to California from Boston with only an oil change. My bf and I did a complete brake job on her once we got to out destination, but on the way we hit the twisty roads in the mountainous roads in Washington state, Oregon and northern California.
Just keep in mind that your "new" car is over ten years old, so if you need to change the wheel bearings and shit, don't be upset at the car. Start off by checking the engine's compression. You might want to change the timing belt and water pump right off the bat. Also, the ignitor and coil as those usually fail after 10 years on Hondas. Then get the alignment checked and the tech can look for signs of frame tweakage at the same time. Hondas are pretty straight forward cars and easy to read, understand and fix, especially these 0BD1 ones. Good used parts for them are plentiful and cheap.
I repeat this a lot, but it's a good thought. My dad told me years ago that when buying a used car, expect to sink another $1500 into it. Keeping that in mind, I stay in good humor about my fleet.

I live with my Aunt and Uncle right now and work part time and school part time. I currently have a perfectly running 98 Taurus. My aunt doesnt understand anything about cars and is always trying to think logically about EVERYTHING, so basically from her POV there's no practical reason for me to buy another car...lol. I just hope its as good as it looks and he says it is so I can rub it in her face.
Anyways you've relieved some of worries I had about the car so thanks for that, I'm sure I'll have more questions later but this forum seems like a good place to hang around.
Thanks.
