could it be that the water pump is frozen up? It doesn't sound like she really sees any more smoke than normal coming out of it, so I'm not conivnced it is her head gasket. Also if it was the head gasket she would be losing coolant like crazy.

The irratic idle is caused because of low coolant, not enough coolant, or air in the cooling system. Coolant gets routed into your cars Fast Idle Thermo Valve. This part is what is causing your idle to act like that.

okay.. well i have the same problem and this thread has helped alot. The problem with mine is that i don't know what is wrong with it same as this case. I drive a 1994 ls and i'm thinking its the head gasket because i put in coolant and its gone fast. i dont know what part to replace or if i should just replace all of it. i got headers and a full exhuast kit and everything, and that causes a lot more heat. i'm really confused on what to fix and i don't have the cash to just go get it looked at but i'm pretty handy myself at fixing things.
so where would the head gasket be located and how would i tell if it wasn't working? and the radiator, i see no real leaks. i heard there was this blue solvent kind of stuff you put in and if it leaks, you will be able to see that it is the radiator leaking or somthing.
the other thing i limited my problem to was the waterpump. how do u tell if its working or not?
i'm completely confused and i need my car fixed quick!

If its your headgasket you are kinda screwed... you need to disassemle your engine and get the head resurfaced and replace the gasket...
