Default Cylinder head bolt

I'm trying to reattach my head after replacing the gasket. One of the bolts (#8 head bolt hole) is getting "stuck" when I try to tighten it. The threads on the bolt aren't stripped - is there some sort of tool I can put in the hole to clean it up? What would cause this?? When I took the bolt out, I didn't have any problems.

Oh yeah, this is a B18C5 head going on a B18B block.

i would say use a wire brush in the threads to clean it out. be very careful, don't force it in!

You could try to use a tap to make sure the thread is fine and also use a little motor oil on the bolt itself...to kida help it a bit

I agree. Make sure the threads are fine...you don't want it to cross thread.

where I can I get a tap?

Upon the recommendation of my shop, I tried some anit-sieze lubricant. With the head out, I could turn the bolt OK. Now I've put the head on, and the bolt won't catch. Am I f**cked?

You probably have the head lined up slightly off the bolt hole. Try dipping the head bolt in some motor oil, and wiggle the head a little to try and get it to catch.

just got a tap and ran it down there - seemed to do OK. Still can't get the bolt to catch when the head is on there.

Any suggestions?

Just spoke with a tech at Vivid racing (in Tempe, AZ), they recommended ARP bolts. They're actually studs that you thread into the hole, put the head on, and then tighten it down with a special bolt. According to them, they're actually stronger, and are used mostly in racing/performance applications. They won't be here for a couple of days though...

I hope it works. One of the shops I talked to told me if the threads in bolt hole are tweaked, then I'd need a new block. I'd rather not go that route...

That was going to be my next suggestion, to get studs. That way, you can thread them into the block with the head off, and then slide the head down the studs.
