Default Redline

The other day i was driving along in my 2000 ls with 70k on it. I was cruising in third at about 5krmp's or so and when i went to shift into fourth i accidentally threw in back into second. Wham, needle winds up at about 7.5krpms, well into the redline. I punched the clutch as soon as it happened, couldent have been in the red for more than a second or two, and i was just wondering how this affects the engine. It runs no different than ran before but i'm just curious how bad it hurts the engine to be in the red

sorry for such a long post, trying to get in all the details

makes the engine work too hard, but good business for your mechanic when you blow a head gasket

a second or two is a LONG time for the engine to be revving at 7500rpm in an LS...since you're saying it seems to be running like normal, all you probably did was knock a couple hundred miles off the life of the motor and burn a lot of gas. Just be careful never to do that again

very common on bmw's since the tranny moves a little on hard turns, its called a "moneyshift" or mis-shift. Worst case scenerio you get bent valves.

Not by over-revving alone.

Besides, you'd immediately notice the lack of power and terrible idle lope of a dropped valve or a valve that doesnt seat properly.

You did the right thing by de-clutching as soon as possible. If the clutch engagement on the mis-shift was fairly gentle, you're fine. You may have taken 1500 miles or so off of the clutch's life, but that's small potatoes.

Just don't do it again.

Yeah engine is still running fine with no difference in power or anything. The clutch engagement on the mis-shift felt about as gentle as you would expect for such high rpm's.
I know its kinda off topic, but since were talking about clutch's...
I still got the factory clutch on there,70k, it's working fine but i can notice a little more play in it than it used to have, do yall think it may be time for a replacement?

My factory clutch lasted until 97K, so unless the clutch engagement is very early and the shift effort is high, I wouldn't worry about it for another 15K miles or more.

I think one bloke 'round here had his factory clutch last until nearly 125K.
