opinions on my custom intake
before i ordered my intake my plans were to relocate my battery, which i have purchased all the necessary items to do so. I noticed for the cold air intakes made for the DA that all of them had a bend to go around the battery. All of them also were no larger than 2.5 in piping. I decided to order some aluminum piping from www.burnsstainless.com and create a velocity stack intake. I ordered a 90 degree bend 3" pipe that would connect(via an AEM bypass valve) to a transition piece which tapers the diameter down to 2.5 inches and this piece is welded to a 45 degree bend 2.5 inch piece and goes into the throttle body, which is bored out to 62mm, or just under 2.5". The piping shipped and the transition already welded(welding aluminum is not my forte) cost me just under $170, the bypass valve cost me $25 and the 3" conical filter cost me $30- so i'm paying $225- which is a little on the high side for a CAI but i belive this will provide better results for me than any other CAI will on the market. I also ordered 2 rolls of 1.5"X15' thermotec insulating wrap for a total of $24 and will wrap the piping thoroughly with the excess going over my A/C piping. The piping is on order now and will be in soon and i should be installing everything in within the month. Once installed I will be posting pics. Any ?'s or comments on my project please let me know

this isnt really about whats easy its more about what will work the best. You're right an air intake is simple, but for a few bucks more I can do this myself and do it better than the cookie cutter that AEM puts out there. I have put a lot of research into this and it is something that when accomplished will give me a good bit of satisfaction for not just picking up the phone and ordering what everyone else does. And I really dont see modifying my car as "trouble" its one of the reasons why I've stuck with my DA though a lot of grief with the car- when fine tuned it is a great car to own.

So what are the numbers? Ya ya I agree making your own shiat is cool and fun to brag about..but what are the end results. All show or some go.... sorry about the bluntness, but alcohol tends to do that sometimes.

as far as the end results, it is something that will more than likelt never be found out. I didnt dyno the car before tihs modification and I more than likely wont dyno the car directly after this modification, so a direct known # of an increase in horsepower will not be known.
as far as the cost of it is concerned, I am fully aware that I am spending more money than what an AEM CAI costs. Again, I will say that if I thought I was going to get the same results I would not have done this. I dont know what else to state regarding that issue. I will state that this intake will put a greater volume of air and at a colder temperature to the throttle body than the AEM will, due to the fact of the transition piece and the fact that the piping is about 15% shorter because there is no bend in the piping where the battery used to be. The less time the air spends in the engine bay the cooler the air will remain.
So we've covered the fact that I am spending more $$, if anyone else has any other opinions on this I'd like to hear it. Thanks

I personally have seen some wack CAI. I guy in SLC made one out of drier vent tubing, but your intake sound like it will work and better than any other intake you could buy. The bottom line is what makes more power and if I have to spend more and take a little more time for more power I would do it.

You are talking about more and colder air with the system that you built but I can't find any numbers as to temp and CFM to other intakes, such as AEM and others. So my questions are do you know these numbers for the AEM and others? If you do how are you going to test yours to know that it's better?
Asking because your spending a lot of money and not even 100% sure that it will be better and it's would be a ***** if it's not.

Agree. I'm all for home-made mods, for many reasons (pride, etc). But I'm sure that companies have put much research into making their products perform as well as they claim. But I do also realize that $225 for an intake is a bit steep.
