The fuel relay turns on the fuel pump and, on some cars, sends power to the distributor (it does on my 96 Integra). Think of a relay as being a switch. When power is provided through the relay, the switch is turned on, and power flows to its intended targets.

As for your problem, I'd say to check your fuse boxes for a blown instrument panel fuse and listen to see if your fuel pump makes a noise when the key is first turned to the ignition position (but the car is not cranking).

What are you talking about? Kick what? You might want to give your car a tune up once and a while and check the starter.

ennnh the car has 355k, gets 34 mpg, i daily drive and autox this car, and it is in perfect running condition and does not need a tune up, also the starter is just fine. but when its hot out and i leave the windows up it won't start, if i jolt (kick, wiggle, punch) the main relay it fires right up. its going to be winter soon so i'll pass on buying a 70 dollar relay for now. thanks

Pick up a relay from a junkyard then. Stick it in your sock and walk right out.
