Default Vtec not working

Ok, this is my second forum I'm going to to ask this question. First my Vtec isn't working and I know this for a fact. I know what my engine should sound like when the vtec kick's in and it doesn't sound like that at all. A fromer owner of a GSR that plays hockey with me even said it's deffinatly not working. Oil is good, engine is heating properly, I know where the vtec should kick in and it just doesn't. It's a 97 GSR with 30,000 miles on it, what could be wrong?

The knock sensor, vtec solenoid, maybe something in the ECU. Are you getting a code or is the engine light on?

A knock sensor advances/retards ignition timing for more power. The VTEC solenoid has a filter screen that may be dirty. You can try to replace that. Usually it will throw a check engine light when something goes wrong with the VTEC system.

to just be sure ur VTEC isnt engauging, you could hook up a simple light to the solenoid and run it into the int. of the car, just to make sure it isnt kickin on.. cuz like j87w said, usually it will throw a CEL when the VTEC has a glitch.. Good luck..

The v-tec noid runs off of oil. Make sure u don't have a leak and that there is enough oil in ur ride. That is usually a problem with the v-tec not workin.

My solenoid went bad and I never got a CEL. But when it happened it was kiking on and off in the high rmp with alot of clicking sounds. You should hear a click when the solenoid switched. I found a solenoid off of ebay brand new for half the price of the dealer and bolted it on and it worked perfectly. Also check your oil level cause it won't kik in if oil is low.

i love it when people say "vtec kicks in" :chuckles:

but i'm assuming its your VTEC solenoid. along with meangreen, a malfunctioning VTEC solenoid will not always through a CEL. notice i said "malfunctioning" because if it had failed, it would definitely throw a CEL.

Hi!
I had the same problem ... my GSR just didn't feel like it was going into VTEC and just didn't sound right. I had a bunch of the things you guys were talking about looked at and it turned out it was just my air filter. That's right ... my air filter was so dirty my car couldn't breathe and get enough air pressure in there to pop open those valves. I hope your problem is as simple as mine.

the valves don't "pop" open, its all driven mechanically.
