Default Temp Gauge Question

I've had my '95 GSR for about a month now.

Since I have had the car the temperature gauge has been about halfway between cold and the middle. I figured this was normal because my previous car (truck actually) never got that warm. One time while I was in traffic I saw the temp gauge swung to the center and I got a little worried but as soon as I got moving it went back down and I thought nothing of it. Just today I noticed that the temp gauge was creeping back toward center and decided that it was time to see if that is normal or not. I logged onto HAN and found out that it may not be my car that is overheating, rather it is not getting hot enough.

From what I have found in my searches, my thermostat needs to be changed.
That would probably also explain my low gas mileage (under 20 MPG all city, but still kind of low).

So from all this rambling I am wondering what the normal position of the temp needle is?

If mine isn't in the right place then if my assumption my thermostat needs to be replaced. Correct me if I'm wrong.

As long as it doesn't go above halfway, you should be fine. It is normal for the temp gauge to go up while sitting in traffic, because you are not moving at speed to get fresh air through the radiator. I don't think it should go that high though. It could very well be your thermostat, or could be your fan switch. Do your fans come on? If they do, then your car is operating normally. If not, check the thermostat and fan switch.

Would a faulty thermo result in bad gas mileage?

I have a 97 GSR and mine is about where yours is. It's perfectly normal, your engine needs to be that warm for your vtec to kick in. If it's to cold it won't work.

Change your thermostats, it'll take 25 mins and will be worth it.

FYI- there are three seperate thermostats or whatever you want to call them. One mechanical thermostat in the radiator(next to the cap?) one to trigger the fans, and one for the gauge.

It doesn't need to be that warm to kick in, just has to be above the C line.

I've never heard that before. I always thought the thermostat was in the rear water passage.

What? Why would there be one to trigger the fans? Where did you get this info?
